Christian Röpke presents his favourite places in Hamburg and fights preconceived ideas about German people.
Christian Röpke will speak on the first day, September 17, 2020.
1 – Which is your favourite place in Hamburg?
There are too many, to pick one in particular. Coming from Hamburg I am always a fan of being at the water, so for instance at the Elbe, the great river flowing through the city. And during the Corona lockdown I began to take my Stand Up Paddle board on the canals of the Alster. I could enter the Alster on a canal in my part of the city, called Eimsbüttel, and paddle right up to the Außenalster in the middle of the city. Especially early morning tours on the weekends were great.
2 – Which is your most original building in Hamburg?
I would have to name three, and not surprisingly all are somewhere around the harbour, which says something about my roots. So without any special order:
- The Elbphilarmonie (Elphi)

2. Oberhafenkantine

3. Fleetschlösschen
More information about Fleetschlösschen
3 – What is the meal or pastry not to be missed in Hamburg?
Pastry: the wonderful “Franzbrötchen”
4 – What is the restaurant we should not miss in Hamburg?
The Vienna

5 – What are the 3 stereotypes about Germans that annoy you the most?
That Germans have no sense of humour.
That Germans are distant.
All Germans love sausage.
