1 – Which is your favourite place in Hamburg?

Dear Ruth (Read – Discover Hamburg with Ruth Betz) from my point of view, you are standing on the wrong side of the river Elbe! Go down through the more than 100 year old Old-Elbtunnel (which is a very nice experience for its own) and take a seat on the wall at Blohm + Voss shipping yard. From that point you have one of the best views on Hamburg, the river – and the St.-Pauli-Landungsbrücken!

2 – Which is your most original building in Hamburg?

The Gingerbread House_DSC_7783_6

As Ruth choosed the newest and biggest original building – I go for an old and very small one: The “Oberhafenkantine” (translated: upper harbour canteen) is the last existing canteen of the old harbour.  These canteens were called “Kaffeeklappen” (coffee shutter). It was built in 1925 – today it’s a small restaurant. Its crooked like the Tower in Pisa. So it’s a little bit challenging eating there… You can reach it after a short walk from Hamburg Mainstation.

3 – What is the meal or pastry not to be missed in Hamburg?

Franzbrötchen

Labskaus – the old shipmens meal ? No way! (Read – Discover Hamburg with Ruth Betz) There is a hamburg special pastry which is called “Franzbrötchen” (French bun) which is quite nice…
But isn’t Hamburg all over the world famous for Hamburgers?  😉

4 – What is the restaurant we should not miss in Hamburg?

That is quite hard to say, there are so many – at that point I completely agree with my collegue Ruth. If you love a truly good steak and international flair, you have to go to “Estancia Steaks” at Große Reichenstraße (in the Old town, between Townhall and Speicherstadt). This place also gives you a special idea, what Hamburger mean if they say “Hamburg is Germany’s gate to the world”. The Restaurant is located in the “Afrika-House” (an old office building of a big shipping company), it is run by a very nice German family, they serve best beef from South America  and Australia. And if you are sitting there, often you can listen to the discussions of shipping managers about deals all over the world…

5 – What are the 3 stereotypes about Germans that annoy you the most?

In addition (Read – Discover Hamburg with Ruth Betz) : There are also some stereotypes in Germany about the people from Hamburg: 1. they are as cold as the north and it would take a lifetime to get friends here, and: 2. people from Hamburg don’t show their “being rich” (instead of people from munich, frankfurt or dusseldorf). Both are annoying too…
